I liked the end of this article much better than the beginning. Let's face it, Trump started this horrible ball rolling and should be held completely accountable for the anti-vaccination movement. Blame must lay where it lays, and he is responsible for millions of people who have died from COVID. Biden came in and had to clean up his and his Republican colleagues mess. The Democrats always have and always will play this role to Republican administrations. Trying to lay the same amount of blame on both parties simply doesn't work intellectually or factually.
Secondly you are right. This country is completely ungovernable as is. The constitution is an anachronism. The Supreme Court is an unelected political body. The legal system is being used to prolong the pandemic. When De Santis challenges a Federal mandate then it takes weeks and months for this challenge to be dealt with it breaks any kind of national cohesiveness we might have to fight COVID.
California has the fourth largest GDP in the world and when the next Republican President tells them to do something - they just won't do it. That is our best hope. Why? Because the Republicans are in the minority in this country, and they have absolutely no legitimacy within a functioning democracy to enact legislation. The Senate is a minority governing body and we are kidding ourselves to call it anything else. In fact we've been perpetrating this kind of hypocrisy around our so-called democracy for years.
I am with you - the US has to break up into federations of States, form a kind of European Union and move forward from there. The system is broken and cannot manage a pandemic effectively when the Federal government does not have the authority to impose regulations.
States should be able to close their borders and impose mask mandates, vaccination mandates and any other mandates the majority of their residents so choose through the democratic election process which exists at the State level..
If Florida and Texas want to have a free for all, then let the Floridians or Texans who live there enjoy it and stay there. I don't want them up here bringing their anachronistic, voter suppression democracies with them. And I'm tired of sending my federal taxes to them because they don't have high enough state taxes in their coffers to support proper human, infrastructure or natural disaster needs.
