In my book The Burning Years I describe how because of the brutal effects of climate change, our civilization headed by a plutocracy, has built a network of underground cities around the world after earthquakes, rising tides, volcanic eruption, pandemics, floods and famines have devastated its surface. The people who survive are hand picked by the ruling elites and live underground for hundreds of years. There are some independent underground settlements as well, and all of them use very high tech as a means of survival. I researched the science and technology in the book quite extensively so there are some interesting descriptions of how this might be done successfuly.

I’m afraid these preppers described in this article won’t last long — one year is nothing, we’re going to need hundreds of years living underground to recover from what is coming to the surface of our planet. I also describe this in my book. Unfortunately we are unable to stop wrecking our habitat like buffalo running over the cliff’s edge toward their own demise, so if we want to preserve elements of our civilization, we’re going to have to find a way of doing that. These preppers are only thinking about the short term in months or years and some of them even imagining the surface of the planet will be as it is today.
