I’ve had it and it was terrifying. I ate barracuda in the Caribbean and came down with it. All the symptoms you describe, but also terrible muscle aches in my back and shoulders that made it impossible for me to sleep. I also had pins and needles, reverse hot and cold and terrible itching. I thought I might be one of the ones who had it for years but I was lucky because it went away after six months. Lyrica was the only thing which helped with the pain since nothing else does, including opiods. They all make it worse.

I was on a tiny island in the Caribbean but luckily the doctor had experience with it but not the right medication. However he used saline wash to try and get it out of my system which helped.

I contacted expert doctors in Florida who talked me through the whole thing, my medical care considering the situation was amazing. My husband’s cheerful support was also incredible, because he never allowed me to believe it wouldn’t eventually go away.

I warn everyone not to eat barracuda in particular and now most of my friends there won’t touch it. I will eat snapper but only when I know who has caught it and that they’re small fish. I also eat king fish and dolphin when I’m down there. I am however extremely careful and I advise everyone else who travels to be careful as well…keep away from the fish that have been listed in the article.
