Being a science fiction writer who has just completed a five book series on what will it be like after "the fall", I am like you also very interested in this subject. Olivia Butler's Parable of the Sower nicely addresses the near future . I am more concerned with many years after Butler's dystopian but realistic scenario, and I allow for the fact that AI and advanced technology help to get us over the hump. A small selected handful of us end up underground using this science and technology for hundreds of years - but we do eventually come out. Also genetic engineering is rife at this time as well.
