This is one of the best articles I've read on Medium. Your differentiate perfectly between libertarianism and progressivism.
As a science fiction writer somewhat in the vein or Orwell - I also totally diverge into the vein of Asimov as well - I believe you've laid out a case for why our civilization is failing.
Given my writing genre I'm very interested in the visits we are having from others who come from outside our planet. They have total control over humans from a physical and psychological viewpoint. This is extremely frightening to the conservative and libertarian hierarchy you describe, but exciting to the progressives. Note the bill that recently passed through Congress under the flag of national defense sponsored by both republicans and democrats.
Suddenly there has appeared on our planet beings who are the next rung up on the social darwinism scale of the Universe.
Their intentions have been conveyed - we are not ready to meet them, they do not like nuclear weapons and they are foretelling a massive collapse created by the effects of climate change. I would say to them that it isn't the effects of climate change but the effects of neoliberal capitalism gone mad and evolutionary darwinism playing out its final chords.
Apparently these visitors from off planet or another dimension are busily collecting our genetic material. They're also studying our phsychological model. No this isn't fantasy too many thousands of humans can verify this.
Because there are no facts as yet to let us know if they are friend or foe, or whether they are also on the Darwinian food chain, or what in the hell they are or what they want, the military and Congress are now paying attention.
I write fiction so I look at quantum physics, evolutionary darwinism, genetics, artificial intelligence, bio-engineering, metaphysics, philosophy and religion and put forward some tentative ideas in my book series.
I think I am happy they are here. I believe they might have worked out how to transcend our primitive mammalian instincts and social darwinism gone badly awry. They've clearly moved beyond it, but to what? That is the big question facing our species right now, as the conservatives and libertarians who are part of it continue to do their best to destroy us.
Thanks again for well-thought out and very timely article.
